Baklava Recipe: Indulgent Layers of Sweetness to Savor at Home

  • 1 pound phyllo dough
  • 2 cups chopped nuts (walnuts, pistachios, or almonds)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare a baking pan by greasing it with butter.
  3. Layer 10 sheets of phyllo dough in the pan, brushing butter between each sheet.
  4. Mix the chopped nuts with cinnamon and sprinkle a layer over the phyllo.
  5. Continue layering phyllo and nuts until all ingredients are used, finishing with phyllo.
  6. Cut into diamonds and bake for about 45 minutes or until golden brown.
  7. In a saucepan, combine water, sugar, honey, and vanilla and bring to a boil.
  8. Pour the syrup over the baklava once it comes out of the oven.
  9. Allow to cool before serving.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a bit of lemon juice to the syrup.
  • Baklava can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container.
