Classic Moussaka Recipe

Classic Moussaka is a traditional Greek dish that combines layers of eggplant, ground meat, and a creamy béchamel sauce. This recipe offers a healthier twist without compromising on flavor, making it perfect for any occasion.

  • 2 large eggplants
  • 1 pound ground lamb or beef
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cups milk
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup grated cheese (such as Parmesan)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Slice the eggplants and sprinkle with salt. Let sit for 30 minutes, then rinse and pat dry.
  3. In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add onions and garlic, sauté until translucent.
  4. Add ground meat to the skillet, cook until browned. Stir in diced tomatoes, tomato paste, cinnamon, oregano, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 20 minutes.
  5. In a separate saucepan, heat milk over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook until thickened. Remove from heat and whisk in eggs and cheese.
  6. Layer half of the eggplant in a baking dish, followed by the meat sauce and the remaining eggplant. Top with the béchamel sauce.
  7. Bake for 45 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.
