Dutch Oven French Onion Soup

A comforting and hearty Dutch Oven French Onion Soup made with savory turkey bacon.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 strips turkey bacon, chopped
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup white wine
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon thyme, dried
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 loaf French bread, sliced
  • 2 cups Gruyère cheese, shredded

Instructions

  1. In a Dutch oven, cook the turkey bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove and set aside.
  2. Add olive oil to the pot, followed by the sliced onions. Cook until caramelized, about 30 minutes.
  3. Stir in the sugar, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  4. Deglaze the pot with white wine and cook for 5 minutes.
  5. Add beef broth and the cooked turkey bacon back into the pot. Simmer for 20 minutes.
  6. Preheat the broiler. Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls, top with bread and cheese.
  7. Broil until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use homemade broth.
  • Feel free to add additional herbs as per your preference.
